Bovingdon and Gadesprings - Field Trip - 19/05/14Roger, Steve and I made a trip to Bovingdon for some late Spring and early Summer species and boy were we in for a treat! We first trapped this site last year on the 11th of June (Trip report HERE)This time though we were simply overwhelmed with species coming in faster than one could jot down.Interestingly we caught most species that we caught last year but as a comparison, we are about 6 weeks ahead of last year (because of the cold Winter of 2012/13)Of course last year was abnormal so we could not go on last years records too much, some of the species that we did get were typically 2 weeks earlier than the books state. The evening was perfect, with a mild muggy feel about it and still 20 degrees at 8pm, the cloud was still with us and the moon stayed at bay (at least until we packed up)The threat of rain seemed to have subsided and the breeze had dropped so we were very lucky indeed. We did not get our target species Light Feathered Rustic, but it needn't have mattered as it was a long shot anyway and there was plenty of interest coming to all four traps as we worked them throughout the night.Highlights included an Alder Moth, Buttoned Snout, Seraphim, Clay Triple-lines, Grass Rivulet and Coronet. The smaller moths were also in abundance, particularly around the twin Actinic trap and several were taken away to examine in natural light.Highlights of the micros included Bucculatrix nigricomella, Mompha lacteella, Mompha raschkiella, Strophedra weirana and Platyptilia gonodactyla, 3 of those new to me.We also managed to get an unusual looking Treble Lines of the form obscura. It really was so nice to see good numbers of the common species as well with 30+ Clouded Silver, 40+ of Red Twin-spot Carpet and Mottled/Common Pug both numbering easily in excess of 25 specimens each.Exhausted as we had finished around 1am at this site, then onto Gadesprings to empty the two traps there, where we found another 3 Alder Moths, Figure of Eighty and Light Brocade amongst a reasonable amount of species.Home at 3am, up at 6am and I felt like I had a hangover this morning, all good fun!Numbers below are as close as I could record! June already! On Sunday night I trapped again after a nice weekend break away. The weather was pretty much perfect with increasing cloud cover and the temperature hovering around high teens as it got dark.Quite a few new for years featured in the catch of a modest amount of moths, given the perfect conditions and time of year. Bucculatrix bechsteinella was a brand new moth for me, a little worn which proved a headache trying to identify.Still a field trip to write up from last night....not enough hours in the day! and again might trap in the garden tonight, if it stays dry long enough that is.Catch Report - 01/06/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths8x Heart & Dart [NFY]1x Straw Dot [NFY] 1x Common White Wave [NFY]3x Common Marbled Carpet1x Buff-tip1x Bright-line Brown-eye1x Brown Rustic1x Flame Shoulder3x Shuttle-shaped Dart11x Nutmeg9x Rustic Shoulder-knot2x Brimstone Moth1x Garden Carpet3x Setaceous Hebrew Character 1x Mottled Pug4x Marbled Minor1x Common Pug4x Ingrailed Clay1x Cabbage Moth2x Tawny Marbled Minor2x Vine's Rustic2x Mottled Rustic1x Silver-Y5x Common SwiftMicro Moths 1x Bucculatrix bechsteinella [NEW!]1x Celypa striana [NFY]1x Ephestia parasitella [NFY]1x Caloptilia robustella [NFY]1x Teleiodes luculella [NFY]1x Hedya pruniana [NFY]1x Celypha lacunana2x Mompha subbistrigella1x Scoparia ambigualis1x Argyresthia spinosella1x Phyllonorycter harrisella1x Epiphyas postvittana1x Adela rufimitrella

Another blooming successful catch!August is upon us, and the mild weather looks set to continue, with a few outbreaksof rain here and there expected over the next week. Today was hot and humid and witha high of 34 degrees, it would have been rude not to set the trap up!Despite clear skies the temperature was still 19 degrees at 6am this morning. Mothswere absolutely everywhere, in the trap, on the wall and within the long grass. Ittook just over an hour of sorting. Unfortunately quite a few had passed away, possiblyto do with 4 dead wasps in the trap and a combination of high temperature and the sheeramount of Dot Moths and Dark Arches, the latter numbering close to 80 individuals.Best Macro moths were Barred Hook-tip, Campion, Slender Brindle and the long awaitedSwallow Prominent (having had Lesser Swallow on numerous occasions)Best Micro moths were 3 Limnaecia phragmitella, Clavigesta purdeyi and the tiny Epinotia nanana. Adding 3 new Micros to my all time list was very pleasing indeed.I will be trapping again on Sunday night.Catch Report - 01/08/13 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson trapMacro Moths1x Barred Hook-tip [NFG]1x Swallow Prominent [NFG]1x Campion [NFG]1x Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet [NFG]1x Slender Brindle [NFG]2x Maple Pug [NFG]3x Dusky Sallow [NFG]1x Scorched Carpet [NFG]2x Oak Hook-tip [NFG]2x Orange Swift [NFY]2x Black Arches [NFY]3x Flounced Rustic [NFY]3x Square-spotted Clay [NFY]4x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing [NFY]3x Copper Underwing [NFY]13x Bright-line Brown-eye2x Brimstone Moth1x Cabbage Moth1x Clay2x Cloaked Minor1x Clouded Border2x Common Carpet1x Clouded Silver10x Common Footman13x Common Rustic72x Dark Arches1x Dingy Shears52x Dot Moth11x Double Square-spot6x Dun-bar2x Early Thorn1x Fan-foot1x Flame2x Flame Shoulder1x Grey Dagger2x Heart & Dart2x July Highflyer2x Large Yellow Underwing1x Least Carpet5x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing6x Lesser Yellow Underwing1x Light Arches2x Marbled Beauty2x Mottled Rustic1x Nut-tree Tussock8x Peppered Moth2x Red Twin-spot Carpet15x Riband Wave2x Ruby Tiger2x Shuttle-shaped Dart12x Silver-Y2x Single-dotted Wave9x Small Fan-footed Wave1x Spectacle4x Straw Underwing2x Swallow-tailed Moth5x Uncertain2x V-pug4x White Satin Moth19x Willow Beauty2x Yellow-tailMicro Moths1x Ancylis badiana [NFG]1x Bucculatrix thoracella [NEW!]3x Limnaecia phragmitella [NFG]1x Yponomeuta padella [NFG]3x Eudemis profundana [NFG]1x Clavigesta purdeyi [NEW!]1x Spilonota laricana [NEW!]1x Epinotia nanana [NFG]1x Phlyctaenia coronata [NFG]2x Argyrotaenia ljungiana [NFY]2x Pandemis corylana [NFY]1x Agonopterix alstromeriana [NFY]4x Cydia splendana [NFY]3x Spilonota ocellana1x Hypsopygia costalis2x Caloptilia alchimiella3x Bryotropha terrella2x Blastobasis adustella1x Trachycera suavella3x Trachycera advenella1x Mompha propinquella2x Aphomia sociella2x Archips podana1x Pandemis heparana2x Batia unitella3x Phycita roborella2x Tischeria ekebladella46x Agriphila straminella2x Hofmannophila pseudospretella2x Acleris forsskaleana5x Pleuroptya ruralis4x Endotricha flammealis8x Carcina quercana8x Agriphila tristella2x Dipleurina lacustrata

Welcome Wetland WandererAnother warm and muggy night on Sunday night (A bit behind with reports!) and yet another opportunity to trap...when will these warm and sultry evenings end? Possibly tomorrow with clearing skies forecast but with such high daytime temperatures still on the cards the forecasters are still suggesting minimums of 14 degrees all week.Easily the best moth of the night was a pristine Silky Wainscot, a bit of a shock really. Is it a primary migrant or a wanderer, I think I will go with the latter.Another good moth for the garden was a beautiful Bordered Pug.I also managed to get the magnifying glass out and pot up a tiny micro moth that turned out to be a first for me Bucculatrix ulmella.Conobathra repandana was also nice to see, as I missed out on one last year having previously seen one on the 17th August 2012Rhyacionia buoliana and Eucosma obumbratana also boosting the garden list.Catch Report - 20/07/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Silky Wainscot [NFG]1x Bordered Pug [NFG]1x Least Yellow Underwing [NFG]1x Dusky Sallow [NFY]1x Oak Hook-tip [NFY]2x Ruby Tiger [NFY]2x Black Arches3x Bright-line Brown-eye1x Brimstone Moth2x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing1x Buff Arches3x Cabbage Moth1x Clay2x Clouded Silver1x Common Emerald 2x Common Footman8x Common Rustic4x Dark Arches35x Dot Moth1x Double Square-spot4x Dun-bar1x Early Thorn1x Flame Shoulder2x Garden Carpet 1x Green Pug1x Heart & Club3x Heart & Dart2x July Highflyer1x Large Yellow Underwing4x Least Carpet2x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Yellow Underwing1x Maple Prominent3x Maple Pug1x Marbled Beauty1x Mottled Beauty2x Nut-tree Tussock1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Pebble Prominent1x Peppered Moth2x Privet Hawk-moth1x Red Twin-spot Carpet20x Riband Wave1x Rustic4x Scalloped Oak1x Shuttle-shaped Dart1x Silver-Y1x Slender Brindle1x Small Emerald1x Small Fan-footed Wave2x Smoky Wainscot1x Spectacle1x Straw Dot3x Uncertain3x Willow Beauty3x Yellow-tailMicro Moths 1x Bucculatrix ulmella [NEW!]1x Eucosma obumbratana [NFG]1x Rhyacionia buoliana [NFG]1x Conobathra repandana [NFY]1x Phyllonorycter harrisella [NFY]1x Pammene fasciana [NFY]1x Bryotropha affinis1x Bryotropha terrella1x Eurrhypara hortulata2x Argyrotaenia ljungiana1x Celypha striana1x Coleophora sp2x Aphomia sociella1x Emmelina monodactyla1x Argyesthia goedartella1x Acleris schalleriana2x Yponomeuta evonymella1x Agriphila straminella1x Cameraria ohridella1x Batia unitella1x Acleris forsskaleana10x Plutella xylostella3x Oegoconia sp4x Pleuroptya ruralis1x Tischeria ekebladella1x Evergestis forficalis1x Orthopygia glaucinalis1x Aphelia paleana1x Hofmannophila pseudospretella20x Endotricha flammealis1x Clepsis consimilana3x Spilonota ocellana1x Phycita roborella2x Udea prunalis1x Pandemis corylana1x Amblyptilia acanthadactyla1x Trachycera suavella1x Aphelia paleana5x Eudonia mercurella1x Ditula angustiorana10x Chrysoteuchia culmella5x Dipleurina lacustrata1x Carcina quercana

Summary[
edit] Description: Heatwave continues More trapping again this week and I put the trap out again on the most favourable night that the forecasters had predicted. Thursday morning saw me going through the trap once again at 6am and jotting down the species present. I would love to trap every night, but couldn't justify the time making lists day after day, often repeating the same species. The trap wasn't brimming this morning but there was one surprise towards the bottom. The wetland Pyralid Donacaula forficella. A little tatty but a very welcome addition to the ever growing garden list. A nice collection of Micros were also new for the year. The first field trip of September (I wonder how many more now until the weather turns!) Last night I was joined by Roger and Steve at Roughdown Common in Hemel Hempstead. We setup 3 traps, a mix of 125w Mv, 160w MBT and twin 40w Actinic with 26w CFL bulb.We ran them through the Dell, starting at the top of the chalk pit right through the wood towards the edge of the A41.Conditions were absolutely perfect with temperatures at around 19 degrees when lights were switched on as early as 8pm (wow these nights are drawing in fast!).After roughly 4 hours we packed up the traps one by one.We did relatively well and probably caught most species that were to be expected this time of year.Best moth had to be the second record for this site this year of Metalampra italica.Other interesting moths included a White-point, 2 Feathered Gothics, a late(ish) Pretty Chalk Carpet, Juniper Pug and Wax Moth. There was also hoardes of Hawthorn and Forest Shield Bugs in the trap.Other animals included a Roesel's Bush-Cricket, a first for me.We also setup one MV trap up at Gadesprings (or base camp as we call it)We returned at about 1am to see what was in the trap. There wasn't a great deal but we did manage a further 9 species that we didn't trap at Roughdown Common, with the pick of the bunch being an Orange Sallow and no less than 7 Old Lady's.Catch Report - 04/09/14 Roughdown Common - Hemel Hempstead - 2x 125w MV Robinson Trap, 1x 40w Lucent Suitcase Trap, 1x 160w MBT Robinson Trap & 1x 80w Actinic Suitcase Trap.Macro Moths2x Angle Shades3x Barred Hook-tip 2x Black Arches20x Brimstone Moth1x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing8x Centre-barred Sallow1x Chinese Characte1x Common Carpet5x Common Marbled Carpet2x Common Rustic3x Common Wainscot8x Copper Underwing1x Double-striped Pug1x Dusky Thorn5x Feathered Gothic2x Flame Shoulder 2x Garden Carpet10x Green Carpet1x Grey Dagger1x Iron Prominent1x Juniper Pug3x Large Yellow Underwing4x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Yellow Underwing3x Light Emerald 4x Maiden's Blush1x Marbled Beauty4x Mouse Moth1x Nutmeg1x Oak Hook-tip1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Pretty Chalk Carpet1x Purple Bar2x Ruby Tiger1x Setaceous Hebrew Character2x Small Square-spot5x Snout1x Spectacle25x Square-spot Rustic1x Toadflax Pug2x Vine's Rustic1x White-point2x Yellow ShellMicro Moths1x Metalampra italica 5x Agriphila geniculea3x Cacoecimorpha pronubana3x Epinotia ramella1x Epinotia nisella4x Plutella xylostella1x Stenolechia gemmella1x Bucculatrix ulmella1x Evergestis forficalis2x Caloptilia syringella3x Apotomis betuletana1x Galleria mellonella2x Cameraria ohridella2x Phyllonorycter quercifoliella2x Pandemis corylana1x Cydia splendana4x Rhopobota naevana2x Blastobasis adustella1x Hypsopygia costalis2x Ypsolopha scabrella1x Hofmannophila pseudospretella2x Pseudargyrotoza conwagana1x Endrosis sarcitrella1x Elachista canapennella1x Coleophora trifolii1x Emmelina monodactyla1x Acleris rhombana1x Tinea semifulvella2x Epiphyas postvittana1x Depressaria daucella1x Agonopterix arenella1x Yponomeuta sp1x Acleris variegana1x Carcina quercana2x Argyresthia goedartella Catch Report - 04/09/14 Gadesprings - Hemel Hempstead - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapOnly extra species recorded Macro Moths1x Common Wave2x Burnished Brass1x Six-striped Rustic7x Old Lady1x Orange Sallow1x Red Twin-spot CarpetMicro Moths2x Clepsis spectrana2x Celypha lacunana1x Scythropia crataegella

Welcome Wetland WandererAnother warm and muggy night on Sunday night (A bit behind with reports!) and yet another opportunity to trap...when will these warm and sultry evenings end? Possibly tomorrow with clearing skies forecast but with such high daytime temperatures still on the cards the forecasters are still suggesting minimums of 14 degrees all week.Easily the best moth of the night was a pristine Silky Wainscot, a bit of a shock really. Is it a primary migrant or a wanderer, I think I will go with the latter.Another good moth for the garden was a beautiful Bordered Pug.I also managed to get the magnifying glass out and pot up a tiny micro moth that turned out to be a first for me Bucculatrix ulmella.Conobathra repandana was also nice to see, as I missed out on one last year having previously seen one on the 17th August 2012Rhyacionia buoliana and Eucosma obumbratana also boosting the garden list.Catch Report - 20/07/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Silky Wainscot [NFG]1x Bordered Pug [NFG]1x Least Yellow Underwing [NFG]1x Dusky Sallow [NFY]1x Oak Hook-tip [NFY]2x Ruby Tiger [NFY]2x Black Arches3x Bright-line Brown-eye1x Brimstone Moth2x Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing1x Buff Arches3x Cabbage Moth1x Clay2x Clouded Silver1x Common Emerald 2x Common Footman8x Common Rustic4x Dark Arches35x Dot Moth1x Double Square-spot4x Dun-bar1x Early Thorn1x Flame Shoulder2x Garden Carpet 1x Green Pug1x Heart & Club3x Heart & Dart2x July Highflyer1x Large Yellow Underwing4x Least Carpet2x Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing2x Lesser Yellow Underwing1x Maple Prominent3x Maple Pug1x Marbled Beauty1x Mottled Beauty2x Nut-tree Tussock1x Pale Mottled Willow1x Pebble Prominent1x Peppered Moth2x Privet Hawk-moth1x Red Twin-spot Carpet20x Riband Wave1x Rustic4x Scalloped Oak1x Shuttle-shaped Dart1x Silver-Y1x Slender Brindle1x Small Emerald1x Small Fan-footed Wave2x Smoky Wainscot1x Spectacle1x Straw Dot3x Uncertain3x Willow Beauty3x Yellow-tailMicro Moths 1x Bucculatrix ulmella [NEW!]1x Eucosma obumbratana [NFG]1x Rhyacionia buoliana [NFG]1x Conobathra repandana [NFY]1x Phyllonorycter harrisella [NFY]1x Pammene fasciana [NFY]1x Bryotropha affinis1x Bryotropha terrella1x Eurrhypara hortulata2x Argyrotaenia ljungiana1x Celypha striana1x Coleophora sp2x Aphomia sociella1x Emmelina monodactyla1x Argyesthia goedartella1x Acleris schalleriana2x Yponomeuta evonymella1x Agriphila straminella1x Cameraria ohridella1x Batia unitella1x Acleris forsskaleana10x Plutella xylostella3x Oegoconia sp4x Pleuroptya ruralis1x Tischeria ekebladella1x Evergestis forficalis1x Orthopygia glaucinalis1x Aphelia paleana1x Hofmannophila pseudospretella20x Endotricha flammealis1x Clepsis consimilana3x Spilonota ocellana1x Phycita roborella2x Udea prunalis1x Pandemis corylana1x Amblyptilia acanthadactyla1x Trachycera suavella1x Aphelia paleana5x Eudonia mercurella1x Ditula angustiorana10x Chrysoteuchia culmella5x Dipleurina lacustrata1x Carcina quercana
