Appears to feed mainly at night on a wide variety of invertebrates, such as crustaceans, polycheate worms and moluscs, and occasionally on small fishes <307>.

This occasionally schooling species inhabits shallow sandy flats to a depth of 35 m or more. Feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, worms, heart urchins and foraminiferans. Juveniles taken by pole and line; adults by net, trap, pole and line, and spear. Consumed fresh or dried.
