This is a female spider. Their body length is approximately 20-30mm. The Nephila fenestrata (Black-legged nephila) occurs ofer most of South Africa, excluding the arid central and western regions. The Nephila fenestrata is the only species of Nephila to occur in the Western Cape.
This orb spider - of some sort - has established itself in our garden. This is the first time, in seven years, that I have seen this species in the garden. Usually, there have been numbers of another species (see other observations). Interestingly, there have only been a few of the other (more commonly seen) species this 2015 season. The span of the legs is estimated to be 70 - 80 mm.
